Have you ever bought something you didn't need because you had part of a set? If yes, you've seen the birdcage effect (鸟笼效应). Here's how it works.
Long ago, a scientist named William James made a bet with his friend Carlson. James said Carlson would end up with a pet bird, even though Carlson didn't want one. On Carlson's birthday, James gave him a pretty birdcage. At first, Carlson just put the empty cage at home. But every time friends visited his home, they asked, “Where's your bird?” Carlson got tired of explaining. Finally, he bought a bird—just like James said!
This story shows how the birdcage effect tricks us. It makes us do something to “match” what we already have, even if we don't need them. For example, if someone gives you winter shoes, you might feel like you need a coat and pants to go with them. That's how smaller choices can lead to much bigger ones—all because of a “birdcage”!
