A Wise Old Man and an Angry Youth
Once upon a time, there was a wise old man living in a small village. The old man had a reputation (名声) and villagers who had problems loved to come to him for advice. But one day, when he was taking a walk,a young man stopped him on the road. “You have no right (权利) to teach others,” he shouted excitedly. “You are as stupid as everyone else. You are nobody at all.”
The old man was not angry at these words at all. He asked the young man, “Let’ s suppose (假设) that you buy a gift for someone and that person doesn't take it, whose gift is it?”
The young man was surprised to hear the question. “It would be mine because I bought the gift,” he answered.
The old man then grinned (微笑) and said, “There you go. It is the same with your anger. You are angry with me, but I do not get upset (沮丧的) about this. Then the anger falls back on you. When you hate others, you yourself become unhappy . But on the contrary (相反地), when you like others, everyone is happy.”
