On Friday, thousands of local people and tourists came to Sanya Dongtian Park in Hainan. They joined in the yearly Dragon King folk custom event. It is a special traditional activity to celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day(龙抬头) on the second day of the second month in the Chinese calendar.
The five-day festival included traditional rituals, cultural markets and fun experiences, aimed at helping protect Hainan's sea heritage.
The ceremony (仪式) began with a traditional parade. It had many activities like welcoming the god, sending gifts from five directions(方向),and reading special poems. People from five Dragon King temples near Sanya joined in, with beautiful music playing from fishing boats on the sea.
There were also sections for cultural products, small gifts and local food, including noodles, meat, seafood and dragon-shaped sugar paintings.
After the ceremony, people went on a hike to collect stamps at cultural sites. Visitors also took part in hair cutting customs, interactive(互动的) games, and Q&A sessions with performers dressed as characters from dragon stories.
The event combined cultural protection and tourism. Hainan began special folk custom work across the island in December.
